Nashville Public Library launches ‘Freedom to Learn’ campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — It is a subject that's taken maintain in Tennessee: books like "Maus" or "Walk Two Moons" have been pulled from shelves.

Whereas those books could be banned from some faculties, there is still some other place you can find them.

"Our job is just to make sure that if you need it, it is here for you," said Public Info Officer for the Nashville Public Library, Ed Brown.

"'Maus' is all checked out right now," said Brown. "So we received extra copies on order but as soon as phrase acquired round about what happened in McMinn County, we obtained a whole lot of holds."

Those are simply some of the two million other supplies at the Nashville Public Library.

"A lot of people do not need to learn these books; they don't want their children to need to read these books, or pressured to learn these books, and that is high-quality," said Brown. "However there are lots individuals who do, and we wish to be there for the people who do need to learn these materials."

And if you want to make your love for these materials identified, what better way than together with your library card? The 5,000 restricted version playing cards for the marketing campaign say "I learn banned books."

"We all watch the TV exhibits that we like; we all watch the completely different sports or root for the totally different teams we're part of," mentioned Brown. "Books aren't any different."

The purpose is to get the 5,000 library cards in the arms of new sign-ups this month.

"We're not attempting to be a push again — a power pushing back against these decisions — we need to be an alternative choice to say, when you might not be capable to get it there... you can get it right here," mentioned Brown.

The limited version library cards are available as long as supplies last.
