Father or mother with hid weapon by chance shoots self while at Arlington ISD college, police say

Arlington police stated Duff Elementary School was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a mum or dad with a hid weapon had his gun by chance go off, hitting the dad or mum within the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary College was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a mother or father with a hid weapon had his gun unintentionally go off, hitting the dad or mum within the leg.

The school had early release and college students have been launched on the deliberate time of 12:10 p.m.

According to police, the parent, recognized as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and by accident shot himself. His injury was not severe.

The varsity district stated White was contained in the building, near the foyer space, and never in the hallway close to students when the gun went off.

Police and college officials said there was no threat made and the guardian did not have "malicious intent."

No students or staff were injured. The dad or mum was taken to an area hospital after being shot within the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said after White was launched from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited places and discharge of a firearm in sure municipalities.

In the two days because the Uvalde mass faculty taking pictures, there have been 5 cases in North Texas related to weapons introduced to varsities or threats made.

Arlington dad and mom said their minds instantly thought of the worst when they have been notified.

No mother or father ever wants there to be a purpose for them to get a text message saying their kid's faculty is on lockdown.

But since this week's deadly capturing at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they can't assist however suppose the worst once they do.

"Once I obtained the textual content message, I was like, ‘Oh my God, one thing is going to occur.’ I used to be shocked," mum or dad Karima Rasheed said.

Whereas most occasions, lockdowns are only drills college students have to participate in, Rasheed's son, Rami, said that figuring out what happened earlier this week made this lockdown completely different. 

"I began seeing my classmates beginning to cry and our instructor received a notification on their phone saying somebody was in the building," he said.

Weapons are usually not allowed on school property, and parents FOX 4 spoke with stated even when it was a mistake, the timing is just horrible.

"What are we going to do? They should go to school, and obviously, statistically, it is unlikely to occur, however you never need to be the one statistic. What if it's your youngsters?" Matthew Mitchell stated.

Mitchell lives across the road from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to a different Arlington school. 

"I’m terrified, completely terrified. I’ve got twin six-year-olds that go to a different Arlington college and each time I hear there's a lockdown or a school shooting, my heart jumps into my throat," he said.

Rasheed mentioned Thursday was the graduation day for 6th grade students at Duff Elementary.

Whereas driving her son to high school within the morning, she had a talk with him about Uvalde and what to do if one thing ever occurred at his school.

"If something occurred, you’ve got to run wherever that’s protected and hide," she advised her little one.

Whereas some say the incident in Uvalde is too fresh to talk politics, Mitchell said one thing needs to be achieved now. 

"They wish to speak about it, they need to campaign on it, they need to fundraiser on it, but they don’t want to truly pass any laws and do anything," he added.
